More accordionists. And more motivated.
I just had a very interesting conversation with Blai Navarro, accordion teacher at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMuC) in Barcelona and at the Conservatoire Professionnel de Música de Sabadell. A tireless searcher for ideas that facilitate the life of new accordionists. What does he want? More accordionists. And more motivated.
What is the problem with children accordionists?
(Determined) The biggest problem I see is the fear and resistance to playing the accordion. Not so much for the children, who visually and even acoustically love the instrument, but for the parents, who see a heavy instrument, sometimes with an old design and that sounds “different” to all the others, and when they find out that it is also expensive, they ignore it. It is true that a beginner’s (7-8 year old) new accordion can easily cost about 2000€: an important handicap for families.
Then, you propose…
We have created the web platform AcoWorld, and together with other friends and several accordion teachers who collaborate in the project, we are struggling to improve all that surrounds the accordion. Our philosophy is based on personal attention to ensure that each person acquires the instrument they need, and we give all the facilities at our disposal to do so.
We also carry out a constant search for new, cheaper instruments for those who cannot afford to buy those instruments that are normally bought to start at conservatories. On the platform you can buy accordions and their most common accessories, and we hope to increase the current offer over time.
An interesting point is that we subsidize some initiation accordions, and we can do it thanks to the commercial margin that we have in instruments of medium-high range and in other products. With that margin, when we make a sale, we bonus the instruments of initiation or access. Thus, we try to eliminate or palliate the initial economic barrier, totally understandable, so we also offer services of rental of new and used instruments as well as service of buyback by changing the current instrument for one of greater or better characteristics. In this way, we hope to encourage families to create more and more promises to play this wonderful instrument (happy).
The AcoWorld platform…
We want to leave a sustainable and personal footprint on every purchase. For example, for each accordion we sell, we plant a tree with the accordionist’s name (he or she can come and plant it with us), and we send our accordionist boy or girl several accessories that we highly value as teachers: an exercise ball with its use guide, a wooden box personalized with natural sweets and candies with your instructions to motivate them, a personalized case with the accordion model that includes a pencil, rubber, pencil sharpener and ruler with a unique phrase for each accordionist, a personalized cleaning cloth along with a bamboo brush with the name of the accordionist laser engraved… all packed in an ecological cotton bag and a few more surprises (smiles).
